Two or three stacked sumac rods together with a thin
bundle of yucca fibers or beargrass form the foundation of
Mescalero Apache coiled baskets. The flat, rather wide
coils are sewn together with strips or splints of yucca
leaves. The stitches are passed through part of the fiber
bundle in the previous coil instead of one of the rods, and
are partially interlocked.
