Tobacco was cultivated on the northern Northwest Coast in
ancient times. It was ground up and rolled into balls and
chewed with lime made from burned clam shells. During the
1800s, tobacco smoking was part of the ceremony during
funeral feasts. This double tobacco basket features a fitted
outer lid that slips over an inner basket, similar to shot
pouches. The inner basket is ornamented in the design of
the "Shar-dar-yar-ar-kee," the shaman's hat.
