Most of the jar- and bottle-shaped baskets of the Paiutes
were coiled with two-stacked rods. Some were covered
with piñon pitch both inside and out for storing and
transporting water. This pitch is the natural resin that oozes
from piñon trees. It was melted to a thick syrup and
brushed on the baskets after they had been rubbed
with a mush of pounded cactus leaves or powdered juniper
leaves to fill the spaces between the stitches.
