Arhat Panthaka Arhat. Panthaka is the central figure in this thangka, which illustrates several types of figures venerated by Buddhists: bodhisattvas, who have reached perfection but stayed in the world to help others; arhats, or highly realized Buddhists; dharmapalas, or protective deities; and lokapalas, or directional guardians. Panthaka is surrounded by, clockwise from upper center:
