Openwork baskets of cedar root were made for gathering
clams. Here, rows of twining alternate between S-twist and
Z-twist, giving a pleasing pattern to the surface. This
technique of wrapped-twining (with a stiff inner weft held to
the warps by a flexible weft that wraps around it)
is one of the oldest ones on the Northwest Coast.
