Burden baskets were used to carry the personal goods of a
family when they moved from one camp to another, and
also to gather corn, mescal beans, and seeds. Western
Apache burden baskets were important in such rituals as the
Sunrise Ceremony, which celebrates a girl's change from
childhood to womanhood. The basket held the many gifts
given to the girl's godmother.
