This model Angyaaq is one of thirteen known in the world. It's proof of a lost building tradition. It models the different pieces needed, and materials and engineering techniques used to build an Angyaaq - like marine animal skins to wrap the hull and lashing to tie all the pieces together. This model taught us how to make a full-sized boat and revive a practice that's been absent on Kodiak for nearly 200 years. A distinctive feature of an Angyaaq is its rounded bow. This bulbous shape at the front enhances speed and eases steering through the Gulf of Alaska's rough waters.
