Flat twined bags (made of hemp and decorated with
dyed corn husks and wool yarn in a false embroidery
technique) were used to store bitterroots and camas roots,
an important part of the diet on the Columbia Plateau.
Today these indigenous foods are still important, and First
Roots ceremonies are conducted every year
