Lama Ngawang Lobzang Gyatso (5th Dalai Lama)
Ngawang (1617-1682) was fifth in the line of Dalai Lamas, of whom the current titleholder is the 14th. He was considered one of the greatest of the line, and consolidated the rule of his Gelugpa sect over central Tibet. The characteristic pointed yellow hat identifies his sect as Gelugpa; the dagger in his belt and book in his hands are his personal signs. Above the lama are the bodhisattva Manjusri and four Gelugpa teachers, either Dalai or Panchen lamas. Below him are the protector Hayagriva and the white and green forms of Tara, the female bodhisattva.
