Whaling has been an important part of Nuu-chah-nulth and Makah culture. The baleen whale depicted here, with only head showing, is likely a Gray Whale, most commonly hunted by these tribes along the outer coast of Washington and along Vancouver Island.

"Whaling has been an important part of Nuu-chah-nulth and Makah culture. Using the motifs of whaler, canoe, whale,. and harpoon often depicted on whaler's hats, the artist here has rendered the design in simple fluid lines, characteristic of the Nuu-chah-nulth graphic style."
