This contemporary cast glass sculpture reflects the traditional patterns of Salish design, set in motion by the presence of the human figure within the whale fin. The sculpture celebrates Washington's spirit and rich traditional Indian heritage of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Marvin Oliver

"In the Spirit of the Ancestors"-Glass has been used as an inlaid material for masks and other sculpture since the late 18th century. This cast whale fin incorporates a human image inspired by a 19th century southern Coast Salish power board, now in the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
