This mask is dedicated to my Apa (Grandfather), Timothy Twitchell. Turn of the century exhibits, such as the Eskimo Exhibit on the Pay Streak at the A-Y-P Exposition reinforced and helped shape the general misunderstanding surrounding Arctic peoples. Through my work, I can connect to my ciulamta, my relatives, and my ancestors, and show people what the Yup'ik, the 'real people,' truly are like. We are still here, our culture is still strong, and indigenous art stands on equal footing with western art.
