S'abadeb-Seattle Art Museum Peterson-a canoe puller himself-chose the shape of a traditional canoe paddle to challenge his abilities to design within the boundaries of the narrow, tapering shape. Bird imagery is often included on canoe journey paraphernalia and in the canoe songs and dances, because birds are symbolic of strength and pride.
