"Spirit of the Ancestors"-The Tsimshian, Tlingit, and Haida peoples are matrilineal, so crests are inherited from the mother's side of the family. The figure represents a woman. Her lower lip is extended to indicate a labret or lip plug, the symbol of female identity and high status. She is the holder of the wolf crest, one of the four Tsimshian clans.
