Exhibit Label     The Waasgo Legend Pole on the left, also called the Gonaquadet/Gunakadeit Pole, most likely came from the Kaigani Haida village of Koianglas/Quinlas. The pole is thought to have been acquired by Governor Brady in 1903 from a man by the name of Yeal-tat-see. The original pole was erected at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis in 1904. It was then sent to the Lewis & Clark Exposition in Portland, Oregon in 1905 and returned to Sitka National Monument in 1906. The pole was recarved by George Benson in 1939 and it traveled to the New York World's Fair in 1964. The Raven/Shark Pole on the right, also called the Shark People Pole, most likely came from the Tlingit village of Klawock. The pole was donated by the Klawock Chief Tom Teh-Gat (Taki-et, Chief Tom). The pole was by Governor Brady in 1903 and taken to the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis in 1904. It then traveled to the Lewis & Clark Exposition in Portland, Oregon in 1905, and was sent to Sitka National Monument in 1906. In 1964 it was erected at the New York World's Fair. The original pole, minus the bear at the bottom, is now in the main lobby of Anchorage Museum of History and Art. Park management had the pole cut in two for the journey to Anchorage in 1987. Governor Brady's description: "It was made for his wife and represents the Kok-wan-ton totems-the eagle dogfish wolf and brown bear."
