Subject     Totem Pole
Photographer     Adelaide de Menil
Exhibit Label     The Kaigani Haida Chief Saanaheit gifted this totem pole, also known as Fog Woman Pole, and these house posts from Old Kasaan to Governor Brady in 1901. They were brought to Sitka and did not travel to the Louisiana Purchase or Lewis & Clark Expositions. The original was loaned to either the Naval Air Station or the Mt. Edgecumbe School in the 1940's and only fragments remain. A replica of the totem pole was carved in 1941-42 by George Benson and Peter Jones and placed at the Sitka National Monument with the original house posts. The house posts were replicated in 1981-82 by Reggie Peterson. Source: Patrick, Andrew 2002 The Most Striking of Objects: The Totem Poles of Sitka National Historical Park.
