The Burke Museum asked Chinook/Puyallup weaver Karen Reed-Peter, whose grandmother had lived at Wapato Creek, to re-create the ancient hat. The old hat was so well preserved that Reed-Peter could deduce how the inner cap was woven in. The double-hat style continues to be made, although later hats are less pointed.

"In the Spirit of the Ancestors"-Karen Reed re-created a thousand-year-old hat in the Burke's collection, excavated from Wapato Creek. Reed's grandmother had lived on Wapato Creek. The old hat was so well preserved that Reed could determine how the inner cap was woven. Hats made in the Puget Sound region in the 19th century were rounded in profile, unlike the pointed top of this older-style hat.
