After a 20-year legal career, Celeste Whitewolf (Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla) dedicated herself to learning and teaching the art of basket weaving.

Thanks to the Artist Family Fellowship grant from the Bill Holm Center for the Study of Northwest Native Art, Whitewolf, and her artist family Brosnan-Dale Spencer (Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla), Beth Ann Gipson (Cow Creek), D’Ana Valenzuela (Apache), and Angie Sorrelhorse (Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs), visited the Burke in 2019 and early 2020 to study the Oregon basketry collections and share the art and cultural practice of basket weaving in our artist studio.
