"In celebration of Filipinx/a/o American History Month, I will be offering a hand's on learning experience with Ilocano Inabel (weaving) focusing on the Kusikus Motif. This sharing will include a deep dive on the Kusikus motif and my personal research of how Kusikus represents Kapwa. We will be working on table or floor looms and I'll provide an overview of the weaving process. (we may switch to frame looms if we cannot source the table or floor looms) Attendees can participate on the somatic experience of weaving, learn about some of the folklore of Kusikus and can view examples of different kinds of Inabel and textiles from the Archipelago of the Philippines. I am currently working on a community woven Kusikus mural as a part of a project called Threads of Belonging and have recently been selected by the Alliance for California Traditional Art's 2026-2027 Apprenticeship Program as a Mentor Artist/Weaver."
About the Artist
Jamie Pesquiza Cardenas is an Ilokana Multidisciplinary artist, Cultural Worker, Medicine Maker and Weaver of Inabel. She believes how we adorn ourselves is a celebration of who we are and where we come from and that clothing is form of spiritual second skin and protection. Jamie's focus has been on the Itneg and Ilokano weaving Motif, Kusikus — which represents a spiral or whirlpool. Its design is believed to dizzy away malevolent spirits. Daughter of Jaime Galinato Cardenas and Angelita Pesquiza Cardenas — She comes from a line of stewards of the land, healers, weavers and storytellers. Jamie shares their cultural inheritance as a pathway for somatic healing and mental wellbeing. Jamie sees their connection to plants and textiles as a bridge to their ancestors and continues the tradition of Inabel as a way to honor their matrilineal line. Jamie has been selected by the National Academy of Design Abbey Mural Prize for a Fiber Arts Mural called Threads of Belonging. Jamie also has been selected by the Alliance of California Traditional Art's Apprenticeship program as a mentor artist.
