Arctic Wings: Miracle of Migration

10 am – 4 pm

Experience the sounds and sights of Arctic birds first-hand during the opening weekend of this national premiere of Arctic Wings: Miracle of Migration.

Schedule:

10:30 am – Paul Bannick, renowned local bird photographer and author of the new book The Owl and the Woodpecker, leads a 30 minute tour of the exhibit. Bannick's photos are included in Arctic Wings.

11 am – Shorebirds of the Arctic with Dr. Stephen Brown
Dr. Stephen Brown, director of Shorebird Research at the Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences and editor of Arctic Wings: Birds of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, will present a stunning slideshow based on his research expeditions to Alaska's North Slope.

1:15 pm – Songs from Around the World: An Arctic Refuge Journey with Debbie Miller
Alaska author Debbie Miller takes her audiences on a slide show journey through the Arctic Refuge to learn about the extraordinary songbirds that arrive there each spring to breed.

2:15 pm – The Boreal Forest with Marilyn Heiman
Many of the birds that migrate through our yards and neighborhoods breed in the vast Boreal Forest of Canada and Alaska, one of the largest unspoiled forest ecosystems remaining on Earth. Marilyn Heiman, director of the Boreal Songbird Initiative and the International Boreal Conservation Campaign, will discuss migratory bird connections between the Americas and the Boreal Forest, and threats from mining and oil exploration facing this vital bird habitat.

All Day – Family Activities
• The Burke lobby will be alive with the sounds of Arctic birds thanks to audio naturalist Martyn Stewart, member of the Wild Sanctuary Team for the Arctic Soundscape Project
• Burke ornithologists will be on hand with a selection of Arctic bird specimens from the Burke Museum collection
• Build your own Arctic bird kite with the Drachen Foundation

Book Signing and Lecture by Paul Bannick
The Owl and the Woodpecker

Seattle-based naturalist and award-winning photographer Paul Bannick will present a slide show, lecture, and sign his new book, The Owl and the Woodpecker: Encounters with North America's Most Iconic Birds. His book is a unique blend of personal field notes, rich natural history, and stunning photographs. Tickets are available starting Oct. 1 through the Burke; $5 for Burke members and $8 for the general public.
