Collections of Kuril Plants and Animals in Russian Institutions

Plants.--Institute of Biology and Soil Sciences (IBSS), Far East Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences, Vladivostok: the largest collection of Kuril Island plants in Russia, including more than 25,000 herbarium sheets. Botanical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg: approximately 3,000 herbarium sheets, primarily material collected from Paramushir and Kunashir (a duplicate set of all species is maintained at IBSS). Principal Botanical Garden, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow: some 2,000 sheets, primarily material collected from Kunashir (a duplicate set of all species is maintained at IBSS).

Aquatic Insects.--Trichoptera: Institute of Biology and Soil Sciences, Far East Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences, Vladivostok: about 530 specimens; Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg: 20 specimens. Megaloptera: Institute of Biology and Soil Sciences, Far East Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences, Vladivostok: 93 specimens; Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg: 26 specimens. Mollusks.--Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg: more than 200 specimens. Institute of Biology and Soil Sciences, Far East Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences, Vladivostok: some 50 specimens. Zoological Museum, Mosc ow State University: some 15 specimens.

Freshwater Fishes.--Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg: 40-50 specimens. Institute of Biological Problems of the North, Far East Branch, Russian Academy of Science, Magadan: several dozen samples from the southern Kuril Islands. Institute of Marine Biology, Far East Branch, Russian Academy of Science, Vladivostok: a few specimens of charrs collected from the southern Kuril Islands.

Amphibians and Reptiles.--Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg: about 50 amphibians and 50 reptiles. Zoological Museum, Moscow State University: about 50 amphibians and 50 reptiles. Institute of Marine Geology and G eophysics, Far East Branch, Russian Academy of Science, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk: only a few samples.

Birds.--Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics, Far East Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk: some 400 samples.
