The Burke’s Antarctic Adventure Weekend!

Seattle, October 10, 2001– On November 10 and 11, 2001, the Burke Museum will help you plan your own Antarctic expedition! A variety of craft and educational activities will abound throughout the museum and at the end of the day you'll take home your own personal logbook filled with your creations!

You can try packing an expedition backpack with all the essentials, climb into some polar researcher’s clothing and have your picture taken, learn how to read a compass and make a sextant, and experiment with fresh- and saltwater as you discover the physics of icebergs. You'll learn about Antarctic animals, and plot your course to the Antarctic on your own take-home map. You can design a flag for your ship and create a family motto like that of Ernest Shackleton: "By endurance we conquer."

On Saturday, UW Polar Researcher Roger Anderson will present a discussion of his 1992 joint US-Russian expedition to the Antarctic. Anderson participated in a recreation of the drift of Shackleton's doomed ship Endurance, with an Arctic-style station on the sea ice. He and his Russian colleagues collected ocean and other data relevant to climate change. He'll share slides from the expedition and discuss his team's findings, as well as interesting stories about his adventures working with Soviet scientists. 2 pm in the Burke Room.

While you’re here at the Burke, you can’t miss the extraordinary photographic exhibit The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition. Over 150 striking photographs, printed from expedition photographer Frank Hurley's original glass plate negatives, film footage, and excerpts from crewmembers' diaries help to recreate this remarkable story of survival in the Antarctic.

Plan your own Antarctic expedition! The Burke’s Antarctic Adventure Weekend runs from 10 am to 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday, November 10 and 11. All materials for crafts are included with the cost of admission. For more information, call 206-543-5590 or visit www.burkemuseum.org.
