Basketry Workshops

The Burke Museum's Native American Basketry Workshops are offered monthly from January 2003 through March 2003 and provide an exceptional opportunity to work closely with an accomplished Native artist while learning the basic skills to create your own unique piece of art. (See dates below).

Southeast Alaskan Native Basketry
Instructor: Delores Churchill
Cost: $140 General; $126 Burke Member plus $50 cedar bark or $110 spruce root

Coiled Basketry
Instructor: Bernadine Phillips
Cost for two days: $125 general; $113 Burke Member, plus $45 materials

In this two-day workshop, Bernadine Phillips of Omak, Washington, will teach Eastern Washington traditional basketry through a cup-shaped sampler of styles. Materials: cedar bark and beargrass. Materials List

2-day class will cover the steps to complete a cup-sized coiled cedar root basket, emphasis will be given to the techniques used in making a basket.

Brief Biographies

Bernadine Phillips

Bernadine Philips Bernadine Phillips is a member of the Colville Confederated Tribes, Okanogan, Methow, Wenatchee Bands. Using ancient methods of the Okanogan-Methow bands, she has been making coiled cedar root baskets for the last ten years. Bernadine uses cedar roots, bear grass, and wild cherry bark to make the coiled cedar root baskets while the materials are wet. Bernadine teaches and demonstrates basketry, and has been involved in the Northwest Native American Basketweavers Association since 1995.
