Bracelet


Description:
Painted, lacquered wood bracelet.

Traditional bracelets were silver or copper. Bracelet curved toward outer ring, top and bottom flat and pained red. Outside uses yellow pain on black background. Machine sewn Shama man's pants, synthetic fabric, gathered and pleated.

Container


Description:
Painted, lacquered wood lidded container. Small container lacquered red on inside of base and lid. Base shows decoration around side, lid has a floral design on top and "fingernail" pattern around outer rim.

Itchyr (Spoon)


Description:
Painted, lacquered wood itchyr, or spoon.

Small carved wooden spoon or ladle, used for eating soup, rice, or ichyr vegetables (for dessert). Handle and bowl carved from 2 pieces of wood (shoma); the bowl is oval, and tapered to a point on one side. The handle has a flange where is joins the bowl, and is fitted into a groove cut into the spoon bowl. Painted a new color scheme, using commercial clear lacquer instead of the traditional black lacquer produced in the villages.

Liquor Sipper


Description:
Painted, lacquered wood liquor sipper.

The liquor is poured in the bottom but does not leak out when the vessel is inverted, because it flows through a long tube. It is then sipped from the straw at the top. Sipper consists of a drum-shaped middle on a foot with stopper-like top. The sides of sipper are flat and decorated in red and yellow floral pattern and dots over black base.

A drinking tube is placed on narrow side of sipper and extends 7cm out. Top shows "fingernail" pattern.

Tea Cup


Description:
Painted, lacquered wood tea bowl or cup. Cup is a tall cylindrical piece with a lid. Cup is decorated with floral, braid and "fingernail" pattern, among others; lid shows a floral pattern on top and "fingernail" design around edge.

Wood Magpie


Description:
Painted, lacquered wood magpie.

Decorative only - no other use. Magpie plays a trickster role in both Nuosu and Han folklore, but decorative lacquered magpies are a modern innovation. Bird stands on a circular base, wings folded against body, tail straight out and beak slightly open. Decorations painted in red and yellow over black background in straight lines, dots and swirls.

Wood Shot Glass


Description:
Painted, lacquered wood shot glass (large).
Traditionally, liquor was drunk from bowls; shot glasses are a modern innovation.

Inside of glass is painted red. Outside shows traditional patterns in red and yellow over black. Next to the red rim is a band of wavy lines between two solid yellow lines. This is followed by a band of braids, cross-overs and dots between two solid red lines, followed by a solid line of yellow and red. Stem is black, base is encircled by a solid line of red around edge.
