| THE JOURNEY INTO ETERNITY: EGYPT |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Achieving Eternity The journey to the underworld was possible only if the body was preserved, or mummified. It could then become the home for one's ka (spiritual life force) and ba (individual personality). These united in the underworld to become the akh, or a transfigured being. Secure tombs (known as per-djet, or Houses of Eternity) were required to safeguard one's mummified remains. Magical texts and images were placed on the mummy and in the tomb. Preparing for the Afterlife Egyptians prepared their loved ones for the afterlife with a lengthy burial ceremony that included mummification, a procession, entombment, prayers, and offerings. Funeral rites had to be properly performed to ensure the deceased's immortality, and family members were expected to bring offerings to the tomb each year. |
