Out of the Silence: The Enduring Power of Totem Poles
October 3, 2002-September 1, 2003

Whales, bears, and ravens from the Burke collection are interwoven with the haunting photographs of Adelaide de Menil and vibrant images of contemporary pole-raising ceremonies. Together, these sculptures and images provide a retrospective view of Northwest Coast totem pole traditions earliest known drawings of totem poles, through the time of seeming silence in the mid-1900s, to the brilliance and vitality of First Nations cultures today.

Many of the photographs in the gallery were taken by Adelaide de Menil, whose book Out of the Silence, first published with co-author Bill Reid in 1971, provides the exhibit's namesake. You can learn more about each of these artists here...
