Pomfret

Selected Characters: Body deep, slightly compressed; head blunt and rounded; caudal fin forked; dorsal, anal and pectoral fins long.

This is a family of pelagic and bathypelagic fishes found in temperate and tropical oceans. Of the 18 species, only the Pacific Pomfret is found in Puget Sound. This 60-cm-long fish is usually found offshore in the northern Pacific. It eats fishes, squids and crustaceans. This species is rare in Puget Sound.
