Global mammal biogeography

South America

Some of Earth’s greatest tropical rain forest lies in the Amazon Basin, and its mammal species have extended northward through Central America into southern Mexico since the Panamanian connection was reestablished. The great Andean mountain chain along the west side of the continent has provided for establishment of forests and alpine zones, containing their unique mammals. Deserts along the central west coast and also east of the Andes in Argentina are the home to yet more mammals.
