Burke Museum hosts weekend talks with PCC Nutrition Educators

Select weekends through June, 11:30 am and 12:30 pm

Seattle – Thanks to support from our generous sponsor, PCC Natural Markets, the Burke Museum will host talks about hot topics in food. Each event includes two 30-minute talks at 11:30 am and 12:30 pm.

Sunday, March 18: “The Diabesity Epidemic” with Leika Suzumura
As cultures around the world undergo dietary acculturation, a nutrition transition is occurring, accompanied by a rapid increase in the rates of obesity and diabetes. The good news is that we have the opportunity with every meal to literally EAT our way towards health. Come learn simple choices you can make to nurture/foster your wellbeing.

Saturday, April 7: “Plant-Based-Diets” with Nick Rose
A diet centered around plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains, and beans is considered one of the most healthy due to the rich range of nutrients it offers. “Plant-based” does not mean a completely vegetarian diet, because certain nutrients are better obtained from animal foods.

Sunday, April 29: “Seasonal Aspects of Nutrition” with Leika Suzumura
Incorporating local, seasonal foods into our diets can connect our bodies with our environment, culture, and regional food system. Learn practical tips to help bring more seasonal foods into your diet, and why it makes sense to eat salads in the summertime and spices in the winter months.

Sunday, June 3: “What is Organic Food?” with Nick Rose
“Organic, natural, free-range, sustainably grown…” some of the claims we see on food packages mean more than others. Many consumers don’t realize that the word “organic” on a food guarantees much more than the absence of pesticides. In this presentation, Nick explains the basics of organic produce, meat, dairy, and packaged foods.

About the Speakers:
Nick Rose, M.S., leads weekly Walk, Talk and Taste classes for PCC Natural Markets, where he reveals the seasonal, sustainable and delicious food choices found at PCC. Before coming to PCC, Nick taught nutrition courses at Bastyr University and his alma mater, Virginia Tech, He enjoys helping others make conscious food choices for improved personal and planetary health.

Leika Suzumura, R.D., has been cooking and studying nutrition since the age of 13. She received her undergraduate degree in nutrition at Bastyr University, and is passionate about food justice and the pursuit of making quality foods accessible to all people. Her strategy is founded on community networks and empowering people with the knowledge and skills necessary to take charge of their health for the greatest quality of life.
