Seattle -- Saturday January 25, 2003 is Artifact ID Day at the Burke! This is your once-yearly opportunity to bring in the treasures from your attics and basements and let our experts help you discover the unique stories behind your personal collections.
Burke Museum Anthropology, Archaeology, and Zoology staff and curators will be on hand to make identifications of your cultural artifacts (from the Northwest, Pacific Islands, and Asia) and objects from the natural world (like bugs, bones, fossils, rocks, minerals, animal teeth, and bird nests). So whether it's the basket handed down from your grandmother, the spider you found in the bathtub, or an arrowhead your child uncovered in the backyard, you'll want to pack it up, bring it down to the Burke, and find out it's history!
Curators will also be available to answer questions and discuss their current research. There is a limit of three items per visitor, because of the event's popularity (no limit on bugs). No appraisals will be given. Artifact ID Day is included with museum admission.
While you're here, take some time to view the Burke's intriguing temporary exhibit, Out of the Silence: The Enduring Power of Totem Poles, a landmark Northwest Coast exhibition featuring the photography of Adelaide de Menil and monumental sculpture from the renowned Burke collection.
Permanent exhibits at the Burke include: Life and Times of Washington State, an interactive romp through the geologic history of our region; Pacific Voices, a cultural exhibit featuring artifacts and stories of 19 different cultures of the Pacific Rim, and Treasures of the Burke, a fascinating display of some of the favorites from our museum collections.
