Smithsonian Museum Day

Sat., Sept. 27, 2014 | 10 am – 5 pm

The Burke Museum will open its doors free of charge on Saturday September 27, 2014, as part of Smithsonian magazine’s 10th annual Museum Day Live! A nationwide event, Museum Day Live! offers free admission to visitors presenting a Museum Day Live! ticket at a participating museum or cultural institution.

Admission is free only with a Museum Day Live! ticket and is available to download at Smithsonian.com/museumday.

Buyer Beware: Fakes, Forgeries, Reproductions, and Art for Sale from the Marquesas Islands

The topic of fakes, forgeries, and reproductions in the art of the Marquesas Islands is both intriguing, and challenging. Though apparently widespread from as early as the late nineteenth century, very little is written on the subject and hard facts are elusive. Art historian Dr. Carol Ivory will focus her talk on the Marquesas, but also touch on other Polynesian cultures.

Burke Trivia Night at the College Inn Pub

The Burke Museum presents a monthly pub quiz for science buffs, culture gurus, and museum lovers. Bring your friends to the College Inn Pub and test your knowledge of the natural world. Compete with other teams for drink vouchers and other prizes. Teams are limited to 6 players. Cost: $5 per team.

Burke Trivia Night happens every first Thursday at 8 pm at the College Inn Pub.

Hosted by the Burke Museum at the College Inn Pub, 4006 University Way NE. Support for Trivia Night was provided by the University of Washington Graduate School. This is a 21+ event.

See a mammoth skeleton and the first found mammoth tooth in Seattle, and sign LuLu’s cast before her tusk goes behind the scenes for conservation.

Junior Girl Scouts, Brownies, and Daisies are invited to participate in hands-on earth science activities to become a Burke Young Naturalist. Sleuth out real jewels from fake look-alikes, investigate fossil mysteries, watch rocks transform into gems, and more! Remembering North America’s Extinct Birds: The Lost Bird Project & Fold the Flock

Join us for a film screening and discussion with the creators of The Lost Bird Project, a film that honors five extinct North American birds. The film follows sculptor Todd McGrain on his journey to install the large bronze memorials he creates in the locations where the birds were last seen in the wild. A discussion with McGrain and Andy Stern, Executive Producer of the film, will follow the screening.
