What do the recycling numbers mean on containers? Is this odd piece of trash recyclable? Join the Burke Museum for a Recycling Fair where you can take in the Plastics Unwrapped exhibit while getting answers to all your questions from the people who make Seattle’s recycling culture the envy of the nation. Participants include Seattle Public Utilities, Waste Management, Cedar Grove Composting, and many more.

Bring in that mystery item you have always wondered how to dispose of properly. Also enjoy free samples of compost and personal products. Bring the kids to make fashion accessories and sea creatures from recycled plastic, or compete in a recycling relay race.

Here's a rundown of what's happening:

In the Plastics Unwrapped exhibit:

  • Haute Trash and EcoReps will lead a design workshop from 10 am - 2 pm. Designers will share their works in progress and to help you design Trash Accessories. At the end of the session, the Burke will host a Trashion Show exhibiting Haute Fashion designers, participants from the workshop and you!

In the Burke Room:

  • 11 am – Where does it go? Marcia Rutan, Community Recycling Program Manager for Seattle Public Utilities, gives a rundown on recycling in Seattle and answers your questions about what to do with those odds and ends recyclables.
  • Noon – The Story of Stuff by Anne Leonard, a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. It'll teach you something, it'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.
  • 2 pm – Trash Fashion Show with Haute Trash and EcoReps! Classic designs from the early years of the Haute Trash ascension will be joined by freshly made creations from some of the hottest young designers on UW campus.
