Meet the Mammals

Add to Calendar Burke Museum
Sat., Nov. 16, 2013 | 10 am – 4 pm
Included with museum admission; FREE for Burke members

Ever wanted to touch a bat? Or get close to a tiger? Meet hundreds of specimens from the Burke Museum’s extraordinary mammalogy collection.

Meet the Mammals is the only opportunity of the year for visitors to see hundreds of specimens from the mammalogy collection on display. There will be hands-on activities for the whole family; many of the specimens can be held or touched. Mammal experts are on hand all day long to answer questions and talk about the amazing diversity of mammals!

Activities include:

  • Learn about the largest, smallest, fastest, most colorful mammals, and their ancestors.
  • What's for dinner? See the tools that mammals use to slice, chop and grind their food.
  • Feel some fur—learn how hair helps protect mammals from cold or sun, and how it helps them hide and communicate.
  • Music from mammals—discover, hear, and play traditional musical instruments made from mammals. Listen to music demonstrations with the University of Washington’s Ethnomusicology Program.
  • Assemble a life-size Orca skeleton with the Seattle Aquarium.
  • Complete the activities required to become a Junior Mammalogist.
  • Color and decorate your own mammal mask to take home.

Meet the Mammals is included with museum admission and is FREE for Burke members.
