IN THE SPIRIT OF THE ANCESTORS: REFLECTIONS ON CONTEMPORARY NORTHWEST COAST ART
In the spring of 2007, the Burke Museum presented the first comprehensive exhibition of contemporary Northwest Coast Native art from the Burke's own collections. The Bill Holm Center is publishing a volume of essays on contemporary art that discuss these collections and reflect on the state of contemporary Northwest Coast art at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Contributors include both scholars and artists: Margaret Blackman, Katie Bunn-Marcuse, Joe David, Emily Moore, Shaun Peterson, Lisa Telford, Evelyn Vanderhoop, and Robin K. Wright. The writers engage with new avenues of inquiry following issues of politics, ownership, and social commentary that have expanded alongside the flourishing arena for contemporary Northwest Coast art. This volume extends the conversation that began with the In the Spirit of the Ancestors exhibit.
