The Bill Holm Center is proud to announce the launch of The Enduring Power of Totem Poles, an interactive site that allows you to see both historical and contemporary photographs of poles in Pacific Northwest Coast villages, and search the Museum’s totem pole photo archives.

On June 11, 2008, Sotheby’s in Paris auctioned one of the model poles that had been missing from the Skidegate set of World’s Columbian Exposition model houses. It is now in a private collection in Vancouver, B.C.

Robin K. Wright gave a talk for the School of Art’s art history lecture series “Hiding in Plain Sight” entitled “Zacherias and the Chicago Settee: Connecting the Masterpiece to the Master.” This talk focused on one of the Skidegate house model artists, Zacherias Nicholas, who’s name has now been linked with a large number of carvings previously attributed to the “Master of the Chicago Settee.”

This is a collaborative project between the Burke Museum’s Bill Holm Center and the Haida Gwaii Museum at Kaay 'llnagaay. Research has been funded by the UW Royalty Research Fund, a Canadian Embassy Senior Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Humanities Exhibit Planning Grant, and the College of Arts and Sciences, University of Washington. The Field Museum of Natural History has facilitated research on their collections and archival records.
